Description

The Privateer Hotel opened on June 1, 1955. The architect was Thomas Litaker. The 40 room hotel consisted of two 2-story buildings with all rooms facing the 11x40 foot pool. Each of the rooms had one of Mr. Litaker's original water colors.

"The hotel is the first new resort establishment in the Kuhio Beach area . . . perfect since the site is a block from the Waikiki Beach, only a few minutes from the Waialae golf course."

Thomas F(ranklin). Litaker was born in Concord, North Carolina on April 26, 1906. He received a Bachelor of Science in 1930 from Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in 1931 from MIT. After working with firms in the Charlotte N.C. area, he worked as an architectural designer with Charles W. Dickey 1940 - 1941.

From 1941 - 1946, Litaker worked as an architectural job captain with the USN, Pearl Harbor Public Works. From 1946 to 1950 he worked for Wimberly & Cook. In 1950 he opened his own firm Thomas F. Litaker.

Mr. Litaker died at his Honolulu home on September 29, 1976, and was interned at the Diamond Head Morturary.

The Privateer Hotel, along with adjacent properties, was replaced by the Prince Kuhio Hotel which opened in March 1980. The hotel is 36 storys with 622 rooms and 12 suites. The hotel is currently the Hilton Waikiki Beach at 2500 Kuhio Avenue.
